Jochem Meijer
Jochem completed his Master's in Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology. His training is in experimental soft matter and fluid dynamics, and his PhD at the University of Twente focused on out-of-equilibrium fluid systems using small-scale table-top experiments combined with theoretical and numerical modelling. During his postdoctoral research at the University of Chicago he worked on the transport of failure in mechanical metamaterials and their activation through acoustic manipulation. Outside the lab he enjoys running, cycling and being with family and friends.
Through his NWO Veni grant, Jochem will combine acoustic manipulation, confocal microscopy, and in-house, tailor-made OCULI particles to directly image how individual particles move and rotate inside dense suspensions as they fail under controlled perturbations, with relevance to shear-thickening fluids and geophysical flows such as debris flows.
